I was lucky enough to get picked for a three-month-long excavation of a Terminal Classic temple site in, pretty much, the center of Yucatan. We stayed in a local eijido and slept in hammocks at night, excavated during the day, and visited fabulous coastal cities and important Maya sites on the weekends. Since we drove the entire way from Oregon to Q. Roo in 10 days, I got to see much more of Mexico than simply flying into Cancun and taking the bus.
