Worth visiting!

43places.com at Where 2.0

Erik and I are sitting in the 2nd row of the Where 2.0 conference, trying not to get nervous about our upcoming talk. The room is full of big video screens, and my talking notes are scribbled on hotel stationary. Hopefully it won’t bomb!

If you are in San Jose or at the conference, come and say hello

Job Opportunities

Dear Maggie,
I have impress with all the comment from anyone in 43places. One weeks ago I have been interviewed from one company in Dubai for Software Consultant position. But I have ever go there. May be you have the reference to me to share everything about living in Dubai?

. . . . and then what happened?

Where’s the hotel stationery now?

Hi Rich

Well, I sat around for a while, and then I gave a little talk about 43places.com and told a story about Xavier de Maistre, who wrote a book in 1790 called Journey around my Bedroom, in which we learn that the attitude you travel with is perhaps more important than the place you travel to.

I tried to make the talk very humane, as the day had been full of technology, and I wanted to tell a story that made folks think about place from a less technical standpoint than thinking of it in terms of maps or GPS locations.

I think I left the stationary in my hotel room!

Lovely nugget of citation! Thanks.

I’m having fun finding my way around in your 43 structures. It’s kind of like a party in the Yellow Pages, but I mean, it’s a really good party!

I’m on the verge of entering the discussion about ‘punk’, ‘indie’, and ‘alternative’ but maybe I’ll take a deep breath instead. A discussion of that sort seems like it would require a great deal of effort to a) negotiate empirical definitions and then b) keep these parsed from the many drifts in usage that have occurred in the last thirty years.

Anyhoo, rock on!

Panel done

I’m just down from the panel discussion and it felt like it went well (hopefully I didn’t hog the answers, or come off as too much the grumpy old man when asked how we were going to get as big as myspace.com).

Is that in the mission statement?

“get as big as myspace.com”? ;)

Sounds like it went well, Josh!

I hope not

It is definitely not in the mission statement. When asked how we were going to do this – I probably sounded a bit contrarian when saying we had no interest in being that popular.

What are the responses from the tech communities?

How are the various techie circles responding to this? Has the conference got any interesting reviews since closing? What now? Where are you all headed with this today?
