Orchard Road

Not worth it!

A review of this place: Who needs it?  — 2 years ago

Orchard Road is just a place to find lots of Western crap…. Hilton, Marriott, Borders Books, Tony Roma’s, 2 Burger Kings, 4 (!!) Esprit shops, etc.

If you want to get the same things you could get at home, or you want to be propositioned by pimps, Orchard Road is the place to go. For any other purpose, it’s absolutely the least interesting part of Singapore.

Comments:

not to mention about 6 McDonalds?
And no, orchard road’s not for being propositioned by pimps, but rather for being accosted by charity ticket-sellers.

Well, Orchard Rd is the only place in Singapore that pimps have come up to me. They might not think you are part of their target market.

oh yes, i did overlook that point about not being part of their target market :\

still, no one i know has ever been solicited at orchard road before, so i guess it’s your luck to have encountered something rare on a visit to singapore!

Orchard Rd

is a shopping and hotel area. And Singapore is the test market for any respectable foreign business that wants to make money and open other boutiques in the rest of the region. So if you don’t find Esprit, Zara, Borders etc there, you wouldn’t find it anywhere else in S.E Asia and how are all those nice Americans and Europeans going to continue to support their mortgages back home otherwise?

And the world is an open place. Singapore-managed hotels are big in other parts of the world e.g. Australia, UK, Malaysia, China and I certainly hope that people there are not going to call them Asian crap. If Hilton & Co are doing well in the country, then the many tourists from all parts of the world (and the majority come from the rest of Asia actually) must prefer them. Why don’t you ask most Americans why they always eat in MacDonald’s no matter where they go?

And why don’t you mention the small and medium local boutiques that exist among the many foreign brand names, the local restaurants and food courts that largely outnumber MacDonald’s and Tony Romas? These foreign names provide alternative and choice to the local population and may comfort visitors from wherever they originated when they visit the island. How many Singaporeans would eat there more than once a month? It’s not because you do not have foreign restaurants and hotels that you are more Asian. It simply means that it’s not economically viable to have them there.

I love Orchard Road, just like I love shopping streets in Paris, New York, Sydney, Madrid, Barcelona, Carpi, Ubud, Bangkok…I can spend hours, weeks, months and years shopping so I can say that they all have similar and different things to offer and the shopping experience is not the same in each city. Orchard Road has some amazing little art galleries, wonderful restaurants e.g. Club Chinois, Lingzhi, Crystal Jade etc etc, what is Tony Romas? I’m going there in 2 weeks and I can’t wait to shop and eat in Orchard – and you are talking to someone who has been living in Europe for the past 12 years.

And Singapore is a city state. In many other cities you get accosted by beggars, prostitutes and what not. Here some foreigners get accosted by pimps (sorry but you must have the look of someone who would buy and wear a fake watch coz my French hubby never has this happen to him before), c’est la vie.

But at the end of the day, you do not like Orchard, you do not like Singapore, that’s your priviledge. We can’t please everybody and of course if pimps can bother you, you can bash Singapore.

Newcastle is the test market for most things in Australia. That doesn’t make it worth visiting. (The wineries in the Hunter Valley might, though.)

Why don’t I mention local places? Because they are less and less common. Orchard Rd used to be more vibrant and interesting…. and cheaper. I lived in Singapore years ago and, despite your assumption, I do like the place. However, I can’t help find it less and less interesting as it sells its soul to all that is western and bland. There are lots of interesting places in Singapore, but not on Orchard Rd.

Land

prices go up with time, it’s normal, though a few years ago, even Orchard Rd was cheap (cheap clothing stores like This Fashion started by a woman from Batam island sprouted like mushrooms all over the shopping district) with the crash in property prices. Now prices are back to “normal” as the economy recovers and so it’s back to being upmarket.

And local fashion and art are getting better over the years on the contrary. I know of more young people setting up their little stalls in the malls and all the top Asian designers have set up shop in Singapore (where else?). And it was amazing when you ask Singaporean girls over here in Europe (Torino, Brussels…) what they want from home and they systematically ask for a 5kg copy of Her World magazine – because fashion in Singapore is better!

And then friends in Singapore lament that there are not enough famous foreign brands on the island, and people organise shopping sprees in the US and in Europe through local forums…so do we or do we not have too many western brands?

I am very happy though to have you admit that you like Orchard Rd malgré tout and that you are just disappointed that it seems to have become too western. That is different from the impression you gave when we first read your entry. And I would certainly agree with you that there are more interesting shops and places to be found elsewhere in Singapore – it really depends on what you’re looking for.

Singapore is still a very young country. It is growing, throwing away things, maybe regretting (and hopefully in time) and then trying to salvage some of them, replacing things thrown out, modifying others, creating new ones etc. I do not know if we’re going in the right direction, but at least we are changing and discovering new things and in general the good thing is that we are not afraid to admit that we’ve done something wrong and try to make more changes to try to set it right. This comes from a society who has nothing to lose but everything to gain.

Just wait and see.
