Stonehenge was great. It was the third stop on our day trip bus tour (1:Windsor Castle, 2:Salisbury Cathedral, 3:Stonehenge). A few tour books give poor reviews for Stonehenge. They say it’s a long drive to see a bunch of rocks in the middle of a farm. They say it’s lousy that the rocks are roped off. I disagree.

I would recommend against driving directly to Stonehenge from central London. Stop by Windsor Castle and Salisbury along the way. It makes an excellent day trip.

Speaking as a photographer, I was happy to see Stongehenge roped off. I don’t want a bunch of tourists in all my photos. There were two big rocks off to the side that people could touch. I was able to get pencil rubbings of Stongehenge. Very cool.

Crowds weren’t too bad. You could easily walk around Stonehenge. No elbow bumping necessary. However, the gift shop was packed. It was nice to hear that they will be moving the gift shop, ticket booth, entrance, etc. further away from main attraction. This will give Stonehenge more of the tranquility that it deserves.

Stonehenge is one of those sites in this world that you are proud to say you visited. I am happy to be one of those people.
