I have stayed in both the Peninsula Excelsior and tne Allson, and both of them are fine.

The Excelsior is a bit more conveniently situated.

Also if you are using Singapore Airlines (the best by far in Asia and even the world) then you could perhaps make use of the Airlines Singapore Stopover packages.

These packages include discount rates at 3 to 5 star hotels, as well as discounts or free entry to a lot of the tourist attractions. Two people can stay for S$60 a night, which is not bad for a 3 star hotel.

I think the only people that could answer your question would be tourists not locals..unless they got kicked out by their spouses or family and had to stay in the hotels :P…And most locals would be more familiar with the 5 STARS hotel only because they usually serve good HIGH TEA and buffet in the weekend-Our all time favorite :)

I saw this very nice BOUTIQUE hotel called 1929, have good reviews on the paper before,..located in the heart of china town. Hotel 1929

And if you like to be in the Little India location, then I’ll recommend the New Park Hotel & Albert Court hotel (between little india and other convienent area). Both these places do serve good food there, personally tried before :).. Albert Court hotel will be a bit closer to the bras basah area which leads to Orchard..and it’s near Sim Lim Square (Multi-storey Electronic and Computer related stuff)

The Excelsior hotel has been around for a long time..as far as I can remember as a child. It’s located in the city hall area..pretty near to the very classy Raffles Hotel, our icon-Esplanade Theatre, Suntec City, Marina Square, Time Square, and the multi-storey Computer hall called FUNAN CENTRE
(selling only computer related stuff)

Not sure if there’s any 3 stars in Orchard Road..Le Meriden seems like one(pretty 70s looking)..there’s excellent food in that area.

Anyway, almost every buiding(even office building) in Singapore has food court so there’s never lack of good food here :D

2 more older ones but charming hotels would be Mandarin Hotel(this one has really excellent location-it looks like 4, or 5 stars but don’t know why website has it rated as 3 stars) and Crown Prince Hotel and ladyhill Hotel(vy good local food).
List of hotels in Singapore

So it’s really depends on your choice of area and where exactly you would like to stay in :) Good luck and hope more good suggestions pour in to you later on ;)

I stayed in service appartment when I was in Singapore March 2006.
The reason was simple, I stayed there about a week, and appartment was more cheaper than I have to stay in the hotel (not 5 stars, around 3 – 4 stars).
I give you one address it is not a hotel but a hostel.
It cost about Sing $ 18 per night, consist of bed and locker, breakfast, free internet access nd free use of a gym down the road.
You can browsing Betel Box through http://www.betelbox.com.

Or if you need a cheaper hotel, there is another one located at behind Merdien Shopping Centre (behind Orchard Road), Supreme Hotel.

Supreme is a 3 star hotel (the price is right) and the location is also great. It is just off Orchard Rd near Plaza Singapura.

For more hotels you may want to check out http://www.wotif.com/ you will get good deals but you can only book 2 weeks in advance and its prepaid.

I regularly travel to Singapore. Hotels there are expensive compared to much of Asia—they aren’t much cheaper than Tokyo for example where there’s a far larger range of budget hotels.

3-star hotels there are plenty of, but do your research before you book – some are hardly 3-star in my experience and are are over-priced for what they are. A good one is Hotel Asia. It’s clean, well located (although not central) and has basic wireless access for internet. The staff were reasonably friendly, but not overly so—only desk staff are well trained. But this is what you’d expect from a 3-star hotel, and it’s perfectly fine. It’s also cheap. The only thing that bothered me was that it was noisy if you got a room on the road side of the building.

You’ll find similar problems/advantages with any 3-star hotel. If price is your main criteria, choose somewhere that’s recommended as safe, having good service, is as close to where you want to go, and that is within your budget.

If you want something a little bit nicer, you need to pay. The Carlton and Rendezvous are both excellent locations and a class above the 3-stars, without being overly pricey.

For something really nice, I’d choose the Swissotel. This is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at anywhere in the world. Really, really good, but you’ll be paying S$180 to S$200 a night for a room.

Yes! I forgot about this Hotel Asia, is nice in my opinion too..pretty small but quite charming, especially their surrounding, nice walk along the Scotts Road to the Orchard Road and the American club(It’s considered the largest in the world with the most overseas Americans living here since the 50’s)..

The Hotel Asia has a pretty good chinese restaurant, serving authentic food and good service, and it’s pretty popular to the local business people.

And The hotel Asia is next to this sheraton hotel(5 stars & owned by one of my univ friends’ dad). The inside is really classy and I love their cafe! You should try it when you get there! They have this mini waterfall partition with translucent glass, very nice view and I love to relax and indulge myself in there with my cuppucino ;)

Also it’s very near to this popular 24 hrs outdoor food area called NEWTON CIRCUS.

And you’re right Zemble, Swissotel is always a safer bet :) And excellent location too.

Quite right—and thanks for the back-up. Although ‘charming’ is not a word that sprung to mind at Hotel Asia ;-), it is a good hotel for it’s class. We should say that subway access is good too, just a short walk away. And there’s a brand new 7-11 underground at the station so it’s good for essentials.

I’ve stayed at the Sheraton several times too. It’s not as flashy as the Marriott or Hyatt just up the road, but it’s a very good hotel. I really liked the rooms. It’s not quite as convenient for shopping, but not particularly inconvenient either. I still prefer the Swissotel of course, but if your friend’s dad can get discounts I’m always happy to change my mind ;-)

And yes, Newton Circus. I wondered whether to mention this, but you’re dead right. It’s the best place to eat in the city IMO and the one truly essential spot that all visitors should go. The food is extremely cheap and totally excellent—as well as being very friendly. It’s a pain to cross two busy roads to get there from the hotels, but it’s still not far—only 5-10 mins walk. Highly recommended.

Well, that’s the good thing about living here, though everything else seems expensive especially the housing, cars etc, but the yummy and CHEAP food actually make up for that high cost of living here ;) I really love the food here and so many choices and varieties! You basically can find food everywhere and quite a few places run 24 hours too!

I can check it up for you on the discount if you like, but no promise…She is an Indonesian Chinese who has a home in Singapore and her brothers were all educated here in Singapore too. She always look me up whenever she is coming back here :)

Regarding NEWTON CIRCUS, they have in fact shifted the old Newton Circus food place to another area, hehe, about 5 mins away :P.. The old place is undergoing some renovation now…

Ahem, there’s one thing about in Singapore, though no nasty pollution like other countries, but we do have 1 type of pollution here-which is “noise” pollution, because we are always renovating and building new landscape/shops :P ..Forever drilling and fixing things here :P

Even all our cars here are “NEW” looking because you have to scrape them after driving for 10 years..all for the sake of looking everything sparkling new and clean :P

Btw, didn’t realise it’s a “pain” to take a 5-10 mins walk or crossing, geez, you do sound like a typical Singaporean, though I do know that you are not one ;)

P.S. I don’t remember you telling where you are from? U.K?

The new/temporary Newton Circus is just as good for me (although I must admit, I have a problem with eating stingrays—it feels like eating the family pet). I’ll be interested to see just how ‘improved’ it is when the renovation finishes.

Does Newton Circus have BGM? I didn’t notice TBH. It made me smile when you mentioned noise pollution—Japan is far, far worse. Japanese people have a real fear of quiet. We just turned down the chance to move to a new flat here for that reason—the flat was fantastic, but the street outside had 24-hour piped background music of the ‘Hammond Organ’ variety. Newton is relaxing in comparison!

my uncle stayed there when he came over….was quite alright. he had a washing machine and dryer in his room as well!

Ya staying in Orchard area is the most central..

Very interesting to know that even hotel has washing machine and dryer, because they usually would only offer that in the service apartments…Anyway most ppl here don’t own a dryer because it’s always shiny :D…And most of us stayed in HDB style of housing(like myself) where you can hang your clothes out like those in Italy ;)

Good recommendation on the Hotel Grand Central!

I like that the “tere 16” idea, thought was very good thinking, getting those kind of backpacker style of accomodation instead of hotels :)

Sophiazz-Are you Singaporean or foreigner living in Singapore btw?? :)

YES I am, very much so!! Glad to meet you here!! :D

Didn’t see you putting up any Singapore entry so really hard to tell where exactly you are from, I mean there are so many foreigners working here :)....And from your name, I would guess that you are a female ;)

Ok, my turn. I try to come back every year and sometimes hubby and I would go to a hotel for a few nights just to have some privacy and let the kids swim in the pool.

We’ve tried the Swissotel at Clarke Quay (TOP), Intercontinental at Bugis Junction (another TOP), ParkRoyal at Beach Rd (great pool and jacuzzi) and New Park at Little India (convenient but noisy, the Indian guests were not very quiet, I’m afraid).

There are some interesting boutique hotels like Albert Court and a few others actually from converted shophouses in the City Area, but as they do not have pools we didn’t go for them.

Yeah, I miss the buffets in the hotels in Singapore, they are the best. Couldn’t find anything similar in all the places I’ve been to, or at least not in the same price and quality range.

Bon séjour in S’pore!

You are funny gal :D

Of course you could have your turn, my sweet lady…just learn to queue up first ok? ;)

Hey, btw you always seem to have great ideas and are funny at the same time. Love it!

P.S. Oops, didn’t realise Albert Court hotel don’t have pool, hmm, I only go there for the food, not for the room :P
So maybe not so ideal for anyone who love to soak themselves under the hot tropical sun ;)

These 2 hotels -Swissotel at Clarke Quay (TOP), Intercontinental at Bugis Junction (another TOP), certainly look very nice to me, but are they 3 stars? (looks too nice to be 3 stars)
