Esalen Institute

Worth visiting!

What's it like?  — 2 years ago

I’ve found a couple massage workshops in August or September that I’m interested in attending, or possibly a yoga workshop. There are so many great things offered, it seems hard to pick just one! I know workshop participants have full access to the grounds, hot tubs and art barn when a class isn’t in session, but I’m curious about what else there is to do there (that is somewhat organized). If I enroll in a massage workshop, for instance, would I have the opportunity to do yoga?

it's unlike anywhere else...

What an amazing experience. I just got back from the “Experiencing Esalen” workshop weekend. I was struck by how fast my group bonded and how easy it was to be open and loving up there—it’s obvious that everyone needs this, but the world outside is so cold. After all the reading I’ve been doing about slowing down and mindfulness, it was rewarding to realize what that actually feels like.

The baths were an experience as well—since nobody seemed to “opt” for the optional clothing, I decided to do as the Romans did and eased my nerves with the understanding that everyone there couldn’t possibly be an exhibitionist. It’s worth challenging the social taboo of nudity—the human body is beautiful and natural in all its forms. I think everyone in the baths was claiming a small personal victory, and that was thrilling.

The food was more amazing than I ever would have expected, and inspired me to eat healthier and more mindfully.

I hope to go back sometime… perhaps for a week-long massage workshop or month-long certification, and/or a month-long workstudy.
