Worth visiting!
...is that it is not worth visiting Machu Picchu if you don’t hike the Inca Trail. I was there in December, and there were Orchids blooming alongside the trail, flowers in bloom, and waterfalls. You will arrive at Machu Picchu very early in the morning, and there are only a few people there.
If you arrive by bus, you are herded through turnstiles like it is an amusement park.

I cannot stress the importance of insect repellent. On our last day on the trail I threw caution to the wind and hiked sans mosquito spray.
I need to preface this by emphasizing that I never felt a thing. At first, my legs looked like I had razor burn, but as the DAYS passed (yes, it took days), the itching and burning became so bad that it woke me up at night. This lasted for over a month. I had thirty on the back of one leg and over 45 bites on the back of the other—and most of them scarred.
I’m from the swamps of Florida, and am no stranger to mosquitos. But the mosquitos in Peru are like something out of the Jurassic period. Be careful!
