Sorry, but I wouldn’t have the faintest idea! Maybey you should contact the campus and speak to a current student.

Will do but in your opinion what would be the best neighborhood 2 live in?

I am an exUSyd student and I know Sydney pretty well. The answer depends on a few things. Do you want to live in a nice neighbourhood with families and shopping malls or an inner city neighbourhood? A trendy neighbourhood…a safe neighbourhood…a cheap neighbourhood? Many students at this campus live in inner city share appartments within walking distance but some areas are less safe at night than others. It also depends if you want to be close to the uni or are you happy to catch a train/bus for half an hour to get there? If you post your criteria I will try to help you further.

Haha what an awesome answer! Well here are 4 things I am looking for:
Cost is a factor so cheap to medium cost would be what I am looking for.
Food is a factor so I would like to be close to restaurants (I like Asian cuisine and I heard it is good and cheap in Sydney) and maybe one or two grocery stores.
Student population… Since this will be a once in a lifetime experience I would like to live somewhere with a lot of students so I can meet ppl and make some local friends ;)
No more than a 30min walk to university.
Please ask me for any further details.
Thank you in advance!

I know Newtown has been suggested to you and is definitely an option many students take. Somewhere near City Rd/Enmore Rd is what you are looking for. Enmore is another suburb name I would check. Possibly Camperdown. That is the eastern/southern side of the uni. Somewhere near Crown St might be OK.
Personally I would prefer to live in Glebe, a bit safer and a bit trendier, on the western side of the campus. It has lots of restaurants but also a shopping mall at Broadway that will meet all your needs. Many students also live around this area. A bit further afield is Ultimo. Many professionals who work in the city live in units in this suburb…probably need to bike or catch a bus to uni though. Then of course there are the residences which I know nothing about.
Hope this helps…try looking for share accomodation through uni housing or www.realestate.com.au is the most popular website…type in some suburbs and you will get an idea of price…I think they have a share accomodation search.

Also…Glebe/Broadway is on the same side and walking distance to Chinatown. Great food halls and supermarkets!

What about neighborhoods like the Glebe and Surry Hills?

Surry Hills is OK…all the inner city areas have their seedy side. You have to know what you are comfortable with. In order of pref. for me would be Glebe, Newtown, Surry Hills…you could also consider a unit in the CBD.

I think Newtown fits your criteria the best. It’s got King St and that whole strip is pretty much filled with Asian (particularly Thai) restaurants.
I’m an ex-USyd student myself and most students tend to gravitate there or Glebe, which is on the other side of uni. Or Broadway which is next to Glebe. They’ve got some uni accommodation but from what I’ve heard, it’s not that great.
Surry Hills is okay but not as close to uni and it can be a hassle getting the bus in at times with all that traffic down George Street. There’s parts of it that I find a bit seedy too, and less students live there.
As for costs, I wouldn’t recommend getting a place in the City – too expensive.
Hope you find a place that best suits you!

Thank you all for the feedback given!
Here is some more information I received from students @ USYD:
Surry Hills – RATING: 4 – 10min bus ride, 30min walk, 10min bike ride
Newtown – RATING: 3 – very close to campus, lots of students, expensive, great for Thai food deals
Glebe – RATING: 4 – very close to campus, lots of students, laid-back athmosphere
Leichhardt – RATING: 5 – Italian center, lots of cafes, 10mins by bus, medium price
Annandale – RATING: 3 – cheaper and closer than LH but not as nice
Stanmore – RATING: 3 – Same as Annandale
Redfern – RATING: 2 – Some parts very close to university, quite rough area, medium-expensive
Chippendale – RATING: 4 – quiet, close to USYD, Central Station, Chinatown, Sydney Fish Market, Broadway Shopping Center, 30mins to Bondi by bus, 40mins to Cogee by bus
What do you think about these ratings? Please post any agreements or disagreements!

For being close to uni, students, asian food I’d rate Newtown/Enmore equal with Glebe.
As for expense – rent will be the greatest expense and all the suburbs you list are inner city & expensive suburbs. How much it costs depends on your luck finding a place, how nice a place you need (also wether house or flat) & wether you plan to share or not. If living alone expect to pay absolute minimum of $A170+/week, if sharing $A100+/week – for a nice place you will pay more. There also seems to be a shortage of rental properties currently so it might be easier to find share accomodation.
Absolutely, Glebe! A great walk to the unis.

Hey Octavian, I’d vote for Glebe or Newtown, or any of the suburbs surrounding them (the suburbs we’re talking about are all pretty small, so it’s a good idea to look at next-door suburbs too—if Newtown & Glebe seem too expensive or if you’re having troulbe finding somewhere, have a look in Enmore/ St Peters/Erskineville/Camperdown/Chippendale/Darlington/Stanmore/Annandale—they’re all still close to campus, are popular with students and have plenty of cheap restaurants, but the rents are often slightly cheaper.
King Street, Newtown’s main drag, is your best bet for cheap food, and it’s right next door to the university.
Glebe (particularly Glebe Point Road) is similar. Glebe is closer to the city (it’s on the northern side of the campus – Newtown’s on the south side)—not sure if this makes a difference to you? You can walk to the CBD and Central Railway station from Glebe, but from Newtown you’d probably need to take a bus.
Good luck—let us know where you end up! When you’re ready to rent somewhere, realestate.com.au and domain.com.au are both good sites (and they both give you the option of ‘searching surrounding suburbs’, which is handy if you only know the names of one or two).
