I don’t know if there is any European country where the price doesn’t already reflect the VAT. In Denmark VAT is 25%, but prices already have this included.

You are lucky, in Canada, the tax is not yet included.

In all European countries, advertised prices always include VAT, unless specified otherwise. VAT in the UK is 17.5%, 19.6% in France and roughly around 20% for other European countries.

To extend what people have said before, VAT (not exactly a sales tax, but close enough) in Britain comes in three tiers:
0% for “essentials” (books, children’s clothing, most unprepared food, odd things like that).
8% for heating fuel.
17.5% for everything else.

In almost all cases, these are included in the ticket price, so you’ll not need to worry about them. The only execptions are things expected to be bought by companies that have registered to be VAT-exempt* – computers, as an example, are generally priced inc VAT and ex VAT, to make it easy for anyone.

  • Like I say, it’s not exactly a sales tax.
