A little less exciting than I expected. by maozed

My boyfriend and I went here to check it out. Maybe we just went at a bad time, but it seemed like there weren’t many people about and many things were closed. I did go into a couple of cute little grocery stores and a tea shop, but otherwise I think I may have missed whatever’s so good about the International District.

a few destinations

I think you need to have a few spots you want to check out. Here’s a potential itenerary:

  • eat lunch/dinner at Shanghai Garden
  • get Bubble Tea at Gossip
  • peek in (and hold your breath) on Liem’s Pet Shop
  • stroll down to Uwajimaya or up to Viet Wah for some exotic groceries

I could imagine 3 or 4 different routes and stops like that, some that might focus on the bakaries, or some that might be more focsued on Vietnamese or Japanese food. I’m not sure I’d experience the ID by just walking around – you need to have some purpose to your visit – a type of cuisine to explore, an exotic grocery item you can only find here – but this is a neighborhood my family visits almost every week.

Well, we went back and went to Uwajimaya, which was awesome. We also went to a bubble tea place which was pretty good. I still don’t think the worthwhile parts of the area are condensed enough, but there are some good things strewn about.
