End of Suburbia / The Corporation: prepare for a new economy... by BlueBerry Pick'n

I have to be honest, I’ve never seen a place with SO MANY expensive jewelry shops & such a poorer local people.

Everywhere I went, “Columbian Emeralds!!”. Freaky. I haven’t travelled much, so maybe its commonplace. But I felt like it was a creepy way to sell questionably-sourced diamonds.

There seemed to be no ‘between ground’, either it was poverty or $30K jewelry. Bizarre. I felt uncomfortable, as if all the happy smiling people really wanted to stab me in the eye for being a ‘rich tourist’.

Check your facts

Barbados does have a high cost of living, but we also have a high standard of living. I will have you know that on the Human development index we rank behind ONLY Canada and the USA. Columbian emeralds and thoses other stores are for tourists such as yourselves.

Get your information right next time, I will be happy to educate you some more if you need.

testy...

This vacationer is from Canada.

This vacationer can’t afford emeralds.

I’m referring to the horrific & well-documented LCurve.

These, too, are facts.

Unless you’re posting from an enclave in Dubai… you should be agreeing with me.

If you don’t wish to agree, I’d prefer you respond respectfully, with dignity befitting both of us.

Now you feel how I feel

I am replying to you from the same Bridgetown where those stores are located. I can’t afford emeralds either but those stores are for tourists, not locals and all the happy smiling people are smiling because its in our nature to be happy, not because we want to stab you in the eye.

Those stores exist because they make a profit from tourists, locals don’t shop there because like every other country in the world there are other stores where prices are reasonable.

As a proud Barbadian, us locals are not a “poorer local people” and it insults my dignity to be referred to as such.

Note that I have been to Canada and its a beautiful place, but it also has very expensive stores where tourists like me could not afford to shop. When people smiled at me I did not assume that they wanted to stab me for being a tourist.

I have travelled throughout the world and it is the same over, I call it the “two street syndrome” there is the “front” street for tourists where prices are very expensive and the “back” street where you can buy the same product for a much lower price. The trick is in figuring out where the back street is.

My offer stands. I can continue to educate you about Barbados if you like.

I’m glad you don’t want to stab anybody in the eye I’ve noticed those who do, when they think nobody’s looking.

I’ve BEEN the poorer local people in Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver… we are everywhere.

Let’s not try to make this a question of The Poor Are Always With Us discussion.

We are only a culture as great as our least fortunate.

& you know it
