I spent a week on an archaeological dig at Arbeia Roman Fort. Most people looking for Roman ruins in the north go to Hadrian’s Wall, but there’s actually quite nice ruins at the fort (ignore the reconstructed gates… they’re not original, though instructive). The museum has some very good pieces as well. A neglected source for Roman history. I guess because the Wall no longer extends to the coast, it’s easy to think that Wallsend is the stopping point.
