Detroit: Not as bad as you're thinking by Anabaena

I’m not from the midwest and recently visited Detroit for the first time. With all the bad press it gets, I was expecting a war zone or something. It’s really not that bad, honestly. Yes, it’s a little rough around the edges. It has its bad neighborhoods like all cities do, but it is oddly charming if you give it a chance.

The area around Wayne State is nice, as is Greek town. I wasn’t impressed with the Mexican restaurants, but there are some good Polish restaurants. You’ll need a car to get around here because everything is spread out and public transportation is bad. You’re probably not going to get mugged or shot, but I have to admit the city is a little creepy to walk around in at night.

Food is FUN

The variety of foods around Detroit is vast.

Hamtramck (a city within Detroit) could be the spot you got the great Polish food. That area around Wayne State is known as Midtown. Mayor Bing recently praised and focused attention on the rise of opportunities that neighborhood.

When it comes to mass transit – Detroit was top class when it had streetcars running from everything I’ve heard. There is a light rail system proposed for the Woodward Ave corridor from downtown out to 8 Mile in 2 stages of development. It’ll take a few years for that to be achieved. Since there are two bus systems serving 1) in city, 2) from suburbs – it can be very confusing what works here. Mass transit routes dwindle after standard work hours and disappear on most routes at night. So it doesn’t work to rely on the system for nightlife very much at present.
