Okay, so if you're in Peru you have to go, but... by Anabaena

It’s really not that great. I know it’s famous, I know it’s the one thing people think of when you mention Peru, but honestly it was the biggest let down. I agree with Tiago’s comment, a lot of Machu Picchu is actually very reconstructed, meaning it’s not entirely real. I skipped the Inca trail and opted for a hike through a more remote part of the Andes. I highly, highly recommend this. Also, make sure to check out some of the lesser-known ruins. They are far more authentic, less crowded, and infinitely more rewarding.

Mega sites

Sometimes they’re good to help you get a handle on other places like that. For example, Stonehenge. Also a bit of a letdown, but an excellent primer on other Neolithic monuments nearby: Avebury. And Cahokia Mounds (though this one is quite good) helps explain other mound sites in the middle United States.
