That’s why rural places in the U.S. are so great…they’re not traffic-gridlocked, over-commercialized, crime-riddled tourist traps like so many of our cool national tourist destinations have become.
The price is right & it’s laid back. Seems like a perfect combination to me.

Yes, I was kidding. Please forgive my former attempt at smarty-pants humor.
You’re right, we’re killing (with kindness, but still…) some of the best destinations in the world, and there’s nothing better than the satisfaction of finding an out-of-the-way place that is interesting and pleasing.

I’m more of a smart-aleck than a smarty-pants but we’re in the same club!
I find joy very easily – in rural America, in big city America and now more recently in Palestine.
Happy travels!

I love that attitude – it’s the hallmark (I think) of the born traveler. With it, almost any place on the planet has intrinsic value and interest… and without it, one might as well stay home and watch TV.
I’ve enjoyed reading your Holy Land entries, which demonstrate a clear-eyed, non-romantic, yet affectionate and enthusiastic view of the region.
Keep writing, and enjoy your journeys!

I’m trying to visit all 50 states, and the Amana Colonies caught my eye in my massive guidebook…
What’s cool to do or see here? It sounds a lot like Pleasant Hill in Kentucky, even though the Shakers were a different group…

Eating eating eating (family style German food at a number of the restaurants).
The furniture factory/shop (beautiful things)
The woolen mills (sweaters, scarves, etc)
The meat market (remember going there as a child with my great aunt who was friends with the owner; we got to go into the back of the store & sample the smoked meats)
A couple of the local historic museums
The Millstream Brewery (a more recent addition, but a fun little micro brewery)
The Amanas are about six small colonies scattered around—small from a population & geographic standpoint.
Also neat…Kalona Iowa which is south of the Amanas less than an hour away. It’s a Mennonite area. You’ll still see the horse drawn carriages & a grocery store without electricity!
