hello!
i stayed here:
http://www.khaosan-tokyo.com/
it’s about 22 USD a night…
hope this helps!
enjoy your trip!!!

In what price range?
Western style or Japanese?

Hotels here can vary widely depending on the season – APR-MAY are probably the highest.

Thanks for the answers so far.

$22 a night seems too good to be true. I checked out the link and it doesn’t look all that bad. Thanks for the tip.

I was thinking more along the lines of a western hotel instead of a hostel and was hoping for something in the $120 to $180 a night range. We’ll be there in Oct.

Any tips on a Japanese style hotel would be appreciated as well since we may opt to spend a few nights in one of those for the experience. I know that our price range probably won’t get us much in a Japanese style hotel so disregard it for the Japanese style recommendations.

There are a few places this cheap. They’re hard to find though besides word of mouth. They are generally very bare bones, sometimes kind of hostel or guest house style.

There’s a chain of hotels that caters to budget Japanese business travelers, called Toyoko Inn -

http://www.toyoko-inn.com/eng/

I think the price for those is around 7000 yen a night. They have free wired LAN access in each room, plus WiFi in the lobbies. They have a great online reservation system also. You can’t count on having English-speaking staff at those, though.

There is another chain here that caters to foreign visitors, called Sakura Hotel -

http://www.sakura-hotel.co.jp/

I think it is also around 7000 yen, and has wired LAN access in each room. It doesn’t have as many locations as Toyoko Inn does, but you can count on having English-speaking staff at those.

Those are the main ones I know of.

Can you tell me about the showers and washrooms? How busy they get?

I stayed in Hotel Sardonyx Ueno. The room is small but functional. Breakfast is included. Very close to subway entrance! Highly recommended!

Sunlite Shinjuku http://www.sunlite.co.jp/index-e.htm is one of the lowest priced hotels room I found.

Shinjuku New City is low priced too.

I’m talking around 8000 yen a night.

I’ve been in Nakano at Crystal Village Apartments… not an hotel, but we got a room for ~80kYen per 12 days.

The room had two futons and 1 regular bed, so do the maths :-)

Nakano is on Chuo (Rapid) line, just one stop from Shinjuku.

The apartments are 10 minutes walk from the station, through Nakano Broadway.. a nice place to buy whatever you need for your living. Out of the broadway there’s the 100Yen shop that will be your first stop if you get an apartment ;-)
