We're moving!

We’re having a baby in February, moving to Utica in March. We’re googling the place like mad trying to find a good school, the local food coop, best place to eat falafel, etc. We’d also like to know what the culture is like. If your three year old son drags a doll onto the playground, will that make you the village wierdo? If you use cloth diapers for your baby, are you a hippie? Can you find organic milk (expired doesn’t count) at the local Krogers? When you’re introduced to people, is one of the first questions they ask “Where do you go to Church?”? These things are hard to get a feel for on the internet just by Googling. I was hoping maybe some people here could tell us what life in Utica is like.

Vernon

have you arrived yet?

I’m actually in Vernon, about 10 miles from Utica, but work in that town.
The previous comments are correct, when I first moved here it seemed slow, but there are funky little places around.
We used cloth diapers, had a homebirth, live on a farm, but more “corporate” hippies and can’t convince the wife to eat falafel all the time. (chuckles)
But welcome! Here’s my backyard…

Awesome Backyard!
We have arrived… haven’t found Peter’s yet, but we did find a Food Coop. So far the most frequent reply to “We just moved here” is to ask my son what sport he plays. A little awkward for him. Haven’t got our legs under us yet, but we’re hopeful we’ll fall in love with the place.

hey i live like a mile away from utica in new hartford…maybe about the wierdo thing…nah there are far more wierd people in utica! seriously!! whats falafel? Theres a mix of people in utica…usually latinos…italians…african americans…um…germans…polish…

You should discover falafel.

Seriously yummy. I found a falafel place in the phonebook, but I haven’t tried it yet.
Falafel is ground chick peas, parsley and spices made into little patties and deep fried. You eat it with lettuce and tomatoes and maybe some other yummy stuff on pita bread. Oh yeah.
We ended up in Chadwicks, not too far from you, methinks.
