I agree with Mary that the people of Vietnam can be annoying. Personally, I found them unbearable. In addition, Vietnam does not have must-see sights like Angkor Wat. So I would leave Vietnam out of your SE Asia itinerary unless you have lots of time to spare. Other people I’ve talked to share my thoughts — one couple I met in China had left Vietnam early, after visiting only Saigon, because they were so disgusted with the people.

I don’t like people judging others based only on the actions of a few. This post reinforces the idea of the “ugly american” who judges people to be unworthy wherever they travel. Everywhere I have traveled I found a few bad people trying to take advantage of you at the tourist places, and everyone else being like human beings everywhere else and welcoming you into their lives and country. You are just the visitor like me, and you shouldn’t be so quick to put a whole country down.

haaaa! amazing. I’ve traveled much of the world, and found Vietnam to be one of the most rewarding, enriching and enchanting places I’ve ever been.
(Though I’ve also noticed folks seem to break down into two groups: Those who like the sweet, nice, package-tourism type travel of Thailand – and those who seek more adventurous travel.)
