I spent more than a year in Queen Maud Land, on the SANAE IV station on the nunatak Vesleskarvet, west of the Jutulstraumen glacier. It is not a soft or easy place to live, but it is good for the soul.

What REAL men do!
What did you keep yourself busy with during that year? Do you have any recommendations?

Because I was one of three scientists on the team, I had work to keep me busy. After hours we played games to keep ourselves busy. Parties also took up a lot of time.
Recommendations? Don’t go there thinking that it is an opportunity to ‘improve’ yourself. You will change, but probably not in any way that you expected.
Of course I strongly recommend visiting the Antarctic if you ever get the chance.
