Chicago winters aren’t even that bad. Try one on the other side of Lake Michigan, where the lake effect happens, those are harsh winters.
Farther North in Michigan’s upper peninsula, they have black fire engines because you can’t see red or yellow fire engines as well during a white-out.
While living in Chicago, I rode my bike to work through the winter, as I do now in Manhattan. Chicago has a far worse winter than New York but it can’t touch a winter in Michigan or Wisconsin, where the snow gets measured in feet and not inches.
