Proboscis monkeys here I come!!!

I want to visit Borneo to see the orangutans, siamangs, japanese macaques, and proboscis monkeys living freely in the wild. Can you imagine looking up and seeing this singular face peering down at you from a tree limb? LOL, now that would be awesome!

Into the Heart of Borneo

Before you go to Borneo, be sure to read a very good book about going into the wilds of Borneo – “Into the Heart of Borneo.” I believe it is by ???? O’Hanlon. I can’t remember his name. Anyway…a very good book…with a very Zen ending. Good Luck.

Thanks for the tip!

This trip will take a while to complete since the cost of flying to Borneo is so high. I will purchase the book soon, maybe it will prompt me to start saving for the trip!

Definitely a very good book!

I read the O’Hanlon book, and it inspired me to spend three weeks trekking in Borneo. Even if you can never go to Borneo, it’s a very good read, funny and surprising. Recently I read a very different book - but also very enjoyable - about traveling and living in nearby Bali and some other uncommon places. That book is Tales of a Female Nomad, by Rita Golden Gelman.

Muchas gracias Macloo

I’m always up for a good read, actually anything that is not related to school is okay in my book! I’ll look into ordering these books soon, I appreciate the info.

Sumatra is listed

Under Indonesia, as the whole island is part of that country: Sumatra

Borneo is listed on its own because the island is shared between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Thanks!

I thought maybe I had lost my mind and created the secret land of Sumatra!

sure! i took lot of photos

proboscis monkeys were very cute. I didn’t know them until i saw them there. At the sunctuary, they had feeding times for them. They came on time for eating but before eating they would post for us to take photos.

I went to East Kalimantan (Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of Borneo in the south, with the provinces south, east and west Kalimantan, the two malaysian states are sabah and sarawak in the north, and the country brunei is between sabah and sarawak) in 1995 for a few months travelling around. I felt that this part of the Island had alot of logging, mining etc. and the only Orang Utans I saw were in a refuge. I saw some red monkeys in the trees from a boat, but I also saw lots of animals on chains (also my experience in the amazon).

I think if you want to see animals in the wild, you should go to the national parks. If you choose Indonesia I think probably south or west kalimantan is better than east, but I think that probably sabah and sarawak are the places to go.

I read half of a book called something like ‘On Foot Across Borneo’ that was really interesting. I will have to finish it someday lol. It was due back at the library and I never got it out again.
