Stay at the Fontaine Hotel – amazing rooms, a great chill-out lounge, a communal kitchen, cute grey cat and the weird reception/second-hand shop makes it work more like a classy hostel than a hotel. Always people kicking around to talk to and at £20 a night you can feel like a rock star on a budget.

And speaking of rock stars, take an evening out to visit Latvia’s 1st Rock Cafe. Cheap drinks, live music and a friendly crowd.

There’s a lovely clean beach for those of you seeking a little more peace and quiet, a couple of museums, pretty churches and some odd shops.

Great little place, Liepaja – I only spent a couple of days there but could have spend much longer.
