I was lucky enough to have some friends that lived there…that is def. the cheapest way to go.

i think the cheapest way to do it is to stay in the boroughs or across the bridge in NJ. if you stay in hoboken, the PATH train runs 24hours so you can party and still go back to your hotel wherever you want. also, you can look on craigslist for people offering their room

The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca is clean, roomy, and in a great location! And it’s inexpensive! http://www.cosmohotel.com/

I was looking for a hotel for my radio station to stay at for CMJ this fall, and it was on one of the cheap travel websites, Travelocity or Orbitz or maybe something else. When my station went, we got rooms with two queen-sized beds for $179 a night. We thought that was good considering we paid over $300 the previous year for rooms half the size with full-sized beds.

Cheapest way is to stay with friends or family if you have any there. Maybe a friend of a friend? Also, you might consider staying somewhere just outside of New York and getting the bus in.
However search some of the hotel discount webstites like hotel.com and see what comes up on the days you are going!

I agree with this. Because it’s expensive to stay in a hotel, lots of New Yorkers will offer their sofabed to a friend of a friend, even if they don’t know them personally. The other bonus is that you get someone to tell you some good places to go. Ask around!

If you know nobody and can not stay at their place, or if a cardboard box is out of the question, and the $100 a night hotel is still too expensive, you have options for staying in Manhattan. the First is the Youth Hostel on the Upper West Side. The Second is The Jane West Hotel on Jane Street in the West Village. It’s a seedy flea bag of a joint that gives you a cot and a common bathroom for $45 a night, but hey, you are in the West Village!

We stayed at the ‘Carlton Arms’
It is an arty kind of place.
The place is ace, but make sure you are visiting all available room before making your choice. All rooms are different, and decorated by a different local artist.

There’s no such place as cheap. I stayed in the thirty thirty hotel (30E 30th Street) but can’t say it’s cheap.

Since you asked for cheap, and not necessarily “good”, you could check the 1291 B&B.

Mixed opinions on it, but certainly it’s cheap.

I found a place in Manhattan that’s fantastic, and only $100/night. Only catch is that you have to play “cat-sitter” for the weekend! You can find it on http://www.vrbo.com Once you’re at the site, you want to find listing #42846. It’s a very user friendly site. To look at more expensive places in NYC, just click on the state of NY, and then it will give you all kinds of options, but if you scroll down far enough, you’ll find NYC. From there, they have listings in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They’re all private owners, so you can always haggle. My hsuband and I spent the last week of our honeymoon in a Waikiki rental we found on that site, and it was fanatastic. And cheap. Good luck.

Somewhere else. =D Seriously, the cheapest place in New York City is Staton Island. It’s a bit of a trek to everything else in New York City, though.

Depends on your definition of cheap. If $ 100-120 – Hotel Pennsylvania (in front of Madison Square Garden) – its along 7th Ave, great place to sleep in, if that’s your only objective and in the middle of the action.

$ 99-$ 45 – youth hostels, if you’re still a youth

$ 44-$ 10 – any relative, friend, you can pitch in some grocery money, nothing is really free nowadays

FREE - stay in Times Square for the rest of the night

You can find rooms to let for short periods of time on craigslist. :D

Lots of native New Yorkers rent out their own apartments for short-term stays (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.): http://newyork.craigslist.com/vac/

There are very few chep places in NYC but you can try the Chelsea Hotel -which is pretty Bohemian -there are loads of rock n roll connections to this place but it is not in downtown and it is very basic. All of the Chelsea area is much less than downtown but some people don’t like it. I would have a look on the internet at the area
http://www.hotelchelsea.com/

You can also try hostels -some ask you to be a membre of the YHA -youth hostel associateion but hostels are usually clean, basic accomidation -beware almost always this is shared living in a doem like atmosphere.

Here is another good link

Also if you are driving in consider staying in NJ or CT and taking the train into the city.

Have Fun -be safe

when i visited NYC i stayed at the big apple hostel (http://www.bigapplehostel.com/) which is located basically in times square (45th btwn 6th and 7th). HIGHLY recommend it. approx $35/night (shared room) and the bathrooms are nice and clean too! i was totally skeptical about staying in a hostel in NYC but was very happy with this place.

You can’t beat the YMCAs in NYC. For $64 up you get a nice clean room, color cable tv, and a safe place to stay. Many rooms do share a bath but most also come with a sink for shaving, light bathing, etc.

I’ll be at the westside Y 01/22 & 01/23.
