I don’t share that idea. those places aren’t full of criminals, it depend not in the place but in the area, there are areas in Mexico City that you should not go, for example; Tepito, Col.Buenos Aires, Col. Doctores. It’s the same with Tamaulipas, Guadalajara and many other places in mexico. In tourist places it’s very safe, I have been living here (in Mexico City) for 23 years and nothing wrong has happend to me, as Jared Zimmerman says, “your intuition and best judgement, if a situation feels unsafe, then get out” so in conclusion. For tourist areas or places, Mexico it’s very safe.

xmxcx, Alejandro, others,

Thanks for the informative replies, particularly cities and locations to go and not to go.

I am now rethinking visiting earlier rather than maybe, please see question at top on how to travel within Mexico.

Thanks
Amit

I agree about Mexico City. The tourist places are safe. Also pickpockets are a problem, so avoid carrying money and important documents (like a passport) in your pocket or purse.

One thing you want to note when visiting Mexico City is that you want to make sure to use only official taxis. They are generally painted green (VW Beetles and small sedans) and have special taxi license plates.

nope… Guadalajara is not dangerous. It depends on the zone you’re visiting, of course… but it’s nothing like Mexico city… you can go walking in downtown Guadalajara at night without any problem… just take care, but its not dangerous

i personally have never had any problems, i’ve only had some clothes stolen from an unlocked car, that was my own fault. if you use your intuition and best judgement, if a situation feels unsafe, then get out, don’t carry all your money in one place, and if you have a safe where your staying try not to keep all your cash on you, carry you wallet in your front pocket, especially in the metro these are all worst cases, you know? i’ve felt safer in many areas of mexico city than i do at home.

if you have any other questions feel free to ask

My experience with Mexico has been primarily in the border towns of Juarez, Tiajuana, and Nogales. I have found it fairly safe as long as you use common sense. I would advise you to travel during the day and try not to make yourself a target.

Of course, this could have changed. Check the state department website for any travel warnings before you decide to go.

If you visit the dangerous places as someone previously listed do this things.
-Always always always keep an eye out and stay alert
-Stay away from large mobs
-Do not stay out for too long.
Basically common things.
If you are in other parts of Mexico, you are generally safe, but keep an eye out.

Please, use COMMON SENSE. A bad neighborhood is a bad neighborhood anywhere you go. You don’t need to panic and label an entire city as dangerous, it’s just not true.

Protect your valuables like you would anywhere, come on, it’s not rocket science to be careful, you can do it and still have fun no matter what.

Besides, missing out on all the wonderful things to do and see in Mexico City just because someone said “it’s full of criminals” is a shame.

Mexico City is a very dangerous place, especially for Gringos/Gringas. I don’t recommend it. If you DO travel there, don’t leave your hotel after dark!

I love Mexico and have never felt unsafe there. However, it is just like any other place on the map, and you need to use your head and know at least a tiny bit of Spanish to get by. I’ve been all over Mexico and in the jungles and I’ve never felt threatened. Just keep your family together and make sure you’re doing the things you would normally do to be safe. Protect your valuables and money, etc. You’ll love it!

Mexico City…tourist family?

Well, first off, if it’s actually Mexico City you’re visiting…

If you have kids – Do not let them out of your sight.

Purses – Carrying them as normal but just kind of have it on your stomach where you can watch it.

Large gatherings – if there is a very busy walk way or store, hold on to purses and kids. Because they can be crowded and you’re not neccissarily going to see someone/feel someone reaching into your purse or pockets.

Just like anywhere…there’s safety in numbers!

Other than that, I think you’ll be fine. Just be cautious with your belongings. Oh and I wouldn’t carry much cash! Credit cards!!! I did that, left my purse with some friends to go see dolphins on a cruise. Was gone for 5 minutes and I was out $50 USD. My friends were sitting right beside my purse just looking the other way. People are quick and tricky there. A watchful eye is always good.

Honestly, Mexico is wonderful. If you play it smart.

Oh and do not play cards on the street. like at a cafe. Keep it in your room if you choose to play cards. (Believe it or not, it is a safety issue).

OH! Health wise, eat LOTS OF YOGURT. Even if you don’t like Yogurt. EAT LOTS OF IT! Because it fights off the bacteria in the water!!!!

Don’t eat food from random food stands. Eat in retaurants that are well known or look very clean, because there is no “Food Safe” program there. So Restaurants!

Specially if you’re european, don’t eat on the streets, your delicate and healthy stomachs will suffer if you do… Really…I’ve known many french, english and spanish people that get sick by eating very spicy and greasy things in streets.

Depends on how adventurous you really want to get.If you are taking a family, stay close to the poplar touristy hangouts…keep your wits about you, as you would in any other unfamiliar place. Look out for pickpockets (my buddy got busted while we were in Mexico City). As far as danger goes, just listen to your gut. I have been a few times in different places and have never felt that I was in trouble. I have traveled there by myself twice, and as a woman, I felt completey comfortable both times.

You might want to invest in a money belt or some object that carries important paperwork, cash, etc. close to your body and under your clothes…I think travel.com has something like that. You don’t have to worry about keeping important documents in your purse/bag/fannypack (whatever) and if something bad were to happen, you wouldn’t lose everything. Never keep your eggs in one basket.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Sunshine,
There are degrees of safe, for example. For example Mumbai in India might have pick pockets during rush hours, but
-No own would be taking your 6 year old anywhere.
-You can carry camera in a strap around your neck all day.
-I have not heard of anyone of coming taking you to all atms to use your atm card.
-Or of robberies.
One would typically give very specific warnings like female traveling alone should avoid taxis in night in Delhi from airport unless prepaid and so on.

There are many pickpockets, so be careful in Mexico city, specially of your travelling in the subway…

In Guadalajara we have the same problem, but it’s not as bad as Mexico city… GDL is way much safer…

And do not go to Colonia Doctores (there’s nothing touristic there anyways) or to Tepito…

I love Mexico and like everyone else says, use common sense. All I read about Italy before I went last year was how bad the pick-pockets were and how in Naples, women were hit on all the time, and I didn’t have one negative experience while there. Same in Mexico. Expect all the problems of a big, big city and act accordingly. I eat everything, even from the street vendors, and yes, I’ve had Montezuma’s revenge but I survived. Guadalajara is beautiful and there is so much to see in Mexico City…I agree with Dofnup, it would be a shame to miss it all.
