I should tell you that I was there about 8-9 years ago. I have a pretty adventurous spirit and I am pretty laid back. I don’t get rattled easy. I felt pretty safe the whole time we were there. People were friendly and I never felt threaten by anything. However I did find some curuption while we were thre. We rented a car so we could explore the island. For the most part we had no problems but we were pulled over twice by the police. Both times we had commited no infractions but ended up paying a brife to the cop. We did not offer the bribe in either instance but they said we could pay the “ticket” with them. Later we were told tourist are targeted for this sort of thing. One of the cops was very nervous that I had a camera in my hands and was very adamant about us not taking any pictures of the incident. I was there for 9 dyas and I found Bali to be beautiful. I would visit Besakih temple, Tanah Lot Temple. Both beautiful. The beaches are all gorgeous and there are beautiful sunsets. I liked driving around and seeing the rice fields, the Balinese neighborhoods and isolated beaches.
I have not read any recent warnings from the State Department so I can’t really tell you if this is a good time to go. The one thing I did not like was the way people accosted me to buy things. That is why finding beaches with nobody on them and secluded contryside was such a treat!. If you go Have a great time! It is a beautiful place. My only other complaint would be that I think I had a pre-conceived notion Bali would be less developed and more virginial. It was disapointing to find The Hard Rock Cafe and many other chains… But I like to experience different things when I travel. The food was cheap and very good.
