If you’re a Loretta Lynn fan, it’s a must.

But,I grew up about 2 miles from her house so seeing it is no big deal for me. Once a year you’d see the same long black car driving toward that area and you’d know she was back. It’s probably because I grew up there, but I’ve heard so many L.L. stories I grew weary of hearing her mentioned (my aunt used to walk to school with her, etc etc). There’s not much else to the town though. It’s gone downhill in the past 5 or 10 years. The Van Lear Historical Society (across from the post office you’ll pass on your way) is a neat place to go if they’re open and you’ve got the time.

I used to volunteer at the historical society. I just worked the building though, no guided tours.

Heh...I grew up 5 miles from there

Down in Paintsville. Van Lear was known more for its green cash crop than for Loretta. Butcher Holler was just a sign post on the way up to the strip mines to hang out and drink some beer. Still, it’s a beautiful area and I miss it. I had heard it had gone downhill as well…sad.

Granted, it wasn’t Beverly Hills when I lived there, but it was a very nice, peaceful place to grow up.

Yesterday

I was up there last night, actually. I only went as far as my old house (on Miller’s Creek), but it really has gone downhill. Mostly, it’s the dilapidated houses that give town that ‘downhill’ mystique. If there were better cared for, things would be different. Plus, it seems that’s where all the drug-sellers reside. The town of Paintsville is progressing. Lots of news businesses in the last few years and it was decorated beautifully.

All in all, it is still a pretty peaceful place to be.
