Worth visiting!

Why I recommend this place to visitors

Its simply a quiet little river town with some good history. If you are interested in the Civil War, it is about as close as you will get to Island No. 10. If you appreciate science and techtonics, you’ll get into the New Madrid fault and all of the damage and upheaval of the earthquakes of 1812. It is not a location to drive a great distance to if it is your on;y destination. Use this as a stop off point to stretch and take advantage of the museum and other local sources of information before you move on.

If you stand on the wooden walkway along the Mississippi River and look to to your front left (upstream) you will see the general location of Island No. 10…or the location of where it once was. It is no longer. Swallowed up by the river over time. It was called Island Number 10 due to its being the 10th island south of the Mississippi/Ohio river confluence upriver.

Go to the museum to find out more about the battle…and to find out about the catastrophic earthquakes that rocked the region in 1812. It is said that the Mississippi river flowed backwars for three days. Thats some earthquake. Are you in danger being here? Well, hard to tell. We had no problems. Check out the seismograph in the museum to see if the big one is coming. If it is, just stay away from anyplace that looks like it is all sand. Why? Just go to the museum and check it out.
