Rufus Wainwright sings a good ‘un about Barcelona…

The summer sun set a vicious circus
When shadows held the world in place
But today i felt a chill in my apartment’s coolest place
Fuggi regal fantasima

The village larks cannot be heard
Cause all the crows got panderers
I can’t escape these velvet drapes
Don’t want my rings to fall off my fingers
Fuggi regal fantasima

The mirror i find hard to face
Cause i fear it’s a long way down
Got to get away from here
Think i know which hemisphere
Crazy me don’t think there’s pain in barcelona
They dance you round a waltz confound
But i fear it’s a long way down
This road
Even if that straw i pulled
And i got to fight that bull
Nothing really does compare to barcelona
Besides in spain don juan’s to blame
But i fear it’s a long way down
And i fear i won’t be around

Got to get away from here
Think i know which hemisphere
Make sure i have all my papers
Laying out my summer clothes
Search for traps in vain like scratching
So my suitcase i can close
Fuggi regal fantasima

oooh.... thanks!

Me too – it’s very high on my list, actually! :-)

When did you visit Barcelona? What was your favourite thing?

JP Creighton
Miró: Chicago

Barcelona was a dream city

And quite possibly my stay there made that the best year of my life.

I stayed there from September 1981 through June of the next year.

so many people

are coming forward and telling me how wonderful Barcelona is… sigh! It will be a while before I can afford another trip overseas, but more and more, I am thinking Barcelona will be where I go…

What was your favourite thing about it?

What I liked or loved about Barcelona

1. The Barrio Gotico, or more properly called El Casc Antic -The ancient shell

2. The secret or little known treasures, such as the remains of a synagogue, now the site of an old carpenter’s shop, behind a small hotel

3. Las Ramblas, the walk between the opposing lanes of traffic on the wide avenue leading from Plaza Catalunya to the port.

4. The mass transit system, including a fab metro and bus system

5. The pubs, clubs, taverns, restaurants, and cafe’s

6. The book shops,

7. Catalan, the language, which is spoken, written, read, and heard almost everywhere

8. The minorities, including Andalusians, Moors, Roma (gitanos), Basques, Americans, and more.

9. The fine arts are alive here: classical music, opera, painting, sculpture, and much more!

10. The history, going way back beyond the Roman Empire to the Greeks, Phoenicians, with archaeology helping to fill in the forgotten existence of how people lived, where they lived and fought and loved.

Great List!

Cafe, you definitely hit it on the head with your list. Just some additional things I liked about the city:

- The Food: Tapas & a bottle of wine for dinner at 9pm (leaving drunk and a little hungry). Long lunch at 2pm (leaving extremely full and ready for a siesta)

- The Wine: Spanish wine, known for using the Tempranillo grape, is very tasty

- The Sangria: Goes so well with a big plate of Paella

- The People: They are so warm, welcoming and inviting. I was over there during the huge U.S./war protests and everyone was still very warm and inviting to me

- Gaudi: Some of the most amazing architecture I have ever seen in my life. Sagrada de Familia is something I will never forget
