The south end is a great place to live if you want to live right in the heart of Boston. You could also go for something like Cambridge a bit further out of the city.
The south end is walking distance to Back Bay(prudential, trinity church, the commons etc), lots of good restaurants and friendly people.
Cambridge is of course lots of MIT and Harvard students. Generally pretty humble but sometimes they can be stuck up and arrogant.

And if you go for the Cambridge area, Somerville tends to be a little cheaper and more diverse. There are a fair number of students there but also lots of non-students. The trains make it easy to get around if you’re living somewhere like Somerville and working in Boston, say.
Porter Square is a nice area.

I’m a big Somerville/Cambridge fan too, if you don’t mind the commute. But, if you could find something in Back Bay in your price range, that’s an awesome area right in Boston.

I think Somerville is pretty sweet. It’s close to the city and doesn’t cost too much. Davis Square is very nice.
Good luck with your apartment search!

I work with a lot of people who live in Brookline and love it. Most of them have children and they say there are plenty of things to do nearby. Other than that I don’t know much about it. I have never lived in Boston myself. I had a two bedroom apartment outside Boston (Franklin) a year ago for $775 and it was a 5 minute walk from the commuter rail.
You can probably get a much larger or nicer place in Brookline or farther out for $1000 a month. I had a really good deal with that place in Franklin, but there were other similar apartments in that area for $800 – $900. I hope you find what you’re looking for. Are you planning on coming out to look at apts?

I’m not so sure yet. Just finishing up college here, and need to secure a job first (elementary education major) then I’ll really get serious.

I am far from a local, but there were a lot of cool places in the beacon hill area that i probably would rent.
