San Francisco (read all 3 entries…)

A question about this place:
Flights. Desperate to come to SF. But can anyone suggest the most economical time of the year to fly from the UK? Which operator? Which website? When? How to fly cheapest? Also, would this period tally with a good time of year, generally, to visit?  — 3 years ago

Hmm. I’ve only ever flown from Canada so I couldn’t telll ya, I’m afraid. The cheapest tickets are probably in summer.

I have been during the fall and summer, but since I am in the US it’s hard for me to comment on fares from outside of the country. Sorry I can’t be of more assistance.

I’ve only flown from the U.S. too. I’ve found it’s less expensive to fly into Oakland. From there you can take BART (subway) into S.F.

I live close to San Francisco, so I’ve never flown in to SFO (except on return flights home). The busiest times of year at the tourist spots (Pier 39, Ghiradelli square, etc.) tend to be in late spring-summer (March-August), it seems like a lot of visitors come then.

I love SF at all times of the year, especially during the winter months when the city is decked out for the holidays. Any time you come, expect to be chilly (so bring a jacket even in the summer!) because it gets cold at night (especially if you are anywhere near the bay).

Since SFO isn’t actually in San Francisco (it’s in South San Francisco, a city about 15 miles south), you’ll need to catch transportation from the airport to wherever you’re staying or visiting. I recommend checking flights into Oakland (20 miles east from SF) and possibly San Jose (45 miles south)-both of these airports tend to be cheaper. In the past, I’ve used Travelzoo.com to find good deals on aifare and hotels. Best of luck!

Honestly San Francisco is great to come to any time of the year. I would recommend, however, that you reconsider the typical summer vacations…it’s a little colder and not the summery California that most tourists think we should all be like. Try to check out the shoulder seasons, April-early June, September-October. The tourist count is down, and the hotels don’t jack up their prices to break your bank.

As far as operators go, any of the major carriers flying out of Heathrow can get your here: british airways, air france, united. But if you want to save a little money and feel comfortable taking our version of the tube into the city, try to fly into Oakland, which is across the bay.

The sites I use to find flights are www.expedia.com or www.travelocity.com.

And another thing: always bring a jacket and leave the shorts at home.

I would check www.priceline.com. I always get excellent deals.

I recently flew to London on Air Canada, and they had great deals, but I’m not sure if they still do.

This is a beautiful time of year to visit San Francisco, as we usually emerge from the fog of summer for a bit, and get some sunny weather.

You should visit now. Our summer in San Francisco comes late and it’s more or less here. Otherwise, I would suggest May.
