88 buddhist shrines in a row...

i first heard of of this piligrmage / retreat on the Island of Shikoku in my Geography of Religion course…its a walking tour from one Buddhist shrine/temple to the next…its takes about a year to complete the pilgrimage…

i dont know when, i dont know how, but someday,,,,i am going to complete this amazing spiritual journey….

Dunno if this makes a difference in your plans but from what I’ve read and all that I’ve talked to (both of which are quite extensive in my own research for making the trip) the trip only takes 2 months max to complete. That’s for only Shikoku itself, the 88 temples plus if you decide to visit any of the 20 additional bangai temples. Length of the trip has been reported at anywhere from 45 days to 60, depending on your pace.

88 Temple Pilgrimmage

Shikoku is wonderful – beautiful rugged mountains and coastline, people are friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed… it seems so different from the rest of Japan. The 88 Temple Pilgrimmage is on my 43 Things, too. All I need now is two months free in spring or summer plus the money and physical condition to do it!
