Worth visiting!

The first time I went to this place

We went in August. I had been to a drive-in only once before back in the 70’s. I barely remember the experience.

We saw Bourne Ultimatum this time. It was a really fun experience. I’m sad that drive-ins are on the decline and soon will be gone.

We hope to go back another time before the season is over this year.

Such a shame

We have a drive-in theater a few miles away from my home. It is one of the last surviving such establishements in our area. At one time there were several.

They are a lot of fun to visit. The only down side is that in mid-summer you have to wait for it to get dark for the movie to start. If you’re seeing both features, you won’t get out until 1:00 or 2:00 a.m.

It’s kind of sad that most of them have ceased operations over the last decade or so. My understanding is that they take up so much land that the owners can make a ton more money on them by subdividing them to build homes than they can by showing movies.

Kind of sad, isn’t it?

We’re quite fortunate in that our drive-in is located under the approach to the runway at a military air base and as such they can’t build homes there. :-)

Sometimes it's too late

I hear you about the lateness of the hour. When I went in August the email announcement said the gates open at 8 and movie should start about 8:30. Well it didn’t start until 9:00 and then there were 25 minutes of trailers! My hubby says that’s not unusual for drive-ins.

I wanted to watch the second feature but had to give up that idea because I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep the next morning away. Besides I think I’m getting too old to stay up that late. :)

Yes, you are lucky your local drive-in is in a protected location. Ours is not and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s gone in a year or two. This one has 6 screens so there’s quite a bit of land and I’m sure it is very tempting to sell out to developers.

That’s the same problem that I have with drive in theaters. I just don’t enjoy staying up that late anymore. Twenty-five years ago, maybe.

Nowadays I get too cranky staying up past my bedtime if I’m just lounging around the house. Imagine how out of sorts I would be if I had to do something that took a lot of mental power, like drive home.

In terms of starting times, it’s a lot better to go to a drive in movie sometime other than summer, but who wants to sit outside in 40 degree weather to watch a movie?
