Worth visiting!

A tip I have about this place

I disagree about the advice given below. You should definitely go on a tour when you are in a hutong. Hutongs are residential neighborhoods, and they are not the best places to go strolling around by yourself or to go alone with another person.

I wouldn’t recommend going with a big tour, however. I went with one other person in a carriage hitched to the back of a bike. That was ideal. Then you have a local tour guide who can show you around, but at the same time you are not with a bunch of awkward people just swinging around their cameras.

If the tour guide knows someone in the area they might even invite you in for tea! We went in to have tea with this little old lady. She was really nice. She even invited us to play mah johng with her!

Mah Jong?

I have only played that on the computer. I have wanted to get a set and play in real life; is it harder in the real-life version than in the virtual version?

Is this a stupid question?

P.S. I am going to remember your advice. I hope to go to China in 2009.

Mah Johng

I actually didn’t play, but my mom does. She mostly plays on the computer. The real life version looks like dominoes. You might be able to see people playing in real life outside of China if you have a sizeable Chinese community in your area. If there is a public park in a Chinatown near you, you might be able to see some elderly people playing. It kind of looks like they are playing dominoes. As for if it is harder in person, I really don’t know.

Oh, and good luck with your China trip! Out of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, my favorite was Shanghai. Hope you get to go there.
