Worth visiting!

Use extreme caution off of the resorts!  — 3 years ago

Jamaica is a poor country, but has natural beauty which most tourists don’t see. If you travel to Jamaica and plan to venture off of the resorts make sure to enlist the aid of a local guide you feel comfortable with. He will keep the locals from hounding you for your money and can show you some really interesting areas. Be sure to keep your nose clean, though. Jamaica has stand-alone holding cells off the sides of roads to place arrestees where you can wait up to a week to be transported to a magistrate.

sorry to ramble...

like with everything else in life, traveling in jamaica depends on your experiences and common sense.

i’ve traveled extensively throughout JA and it’s been easy for me, most likely because i live in a west indian neighborhood in brooklyn and speak patois fluently. what i mean is, the more familiar you are with the culture, the easier time you’ll have. it definitely would help to know someone or have some contacts before you get down there. quite honestly, i would recommend to anyone to go to negril first, and actually NOT to stay in the resorts, but on the cliff side, where you’ll meet nicer people who are more willing and able not to tourist hustle you.

i am not saying jamaica is an easy place- trust me, i was there again for 2 weeks last march and i wanted to KILL almost everyone i came in contact with, but if you catch it at the right time and with the right attitude it’s definitely worth exploring.
