Not worth visiting!

one of the dirtiest cities I've ever visited in Asia

Dhaka is a sad place. I had an opportunity to travel Asian countries. And my first impression when I got to Dhaka is… dirty. I understand that Dhaka is very poor country and the sanitation quality in poor country tend to be low because people are just busy to survive. But in Dhaka, it is not just that. It almost seem to be a part of culture. You visit a wealthy family’s house in Dhaka and inside house looks very clean. Then once you step outside, you see full of garbage on the street. They seems not to care about public street.
For example, when I was in vietnam and I was at the poor area of Vietnam. But the streets are much much cleaner. I heard that if you go to Bangladesh/India community in the USA, the streets tend to be really dirty, also. So, I think it may be really a part of culture.

And also it is very sad that the Dhaka has the largest slum.

i don’t think it’s right to say it’s part of the culture. how can filthiness be part of a culture – it doesn’t make sense.

the sad thing is that they just don’t know any better, and the government in bangladesh isn’t doing much at all to help clean it up.

civic sense

I guess what I was trying to say was not that they are not filthy by nature but rather that they are not used to the concept of “civic sense”. They may keep their own house and own space very clean. But once they go on pubic, they don’t care throwing the garbage because it is not theirs. My friend who lives in Indian/Bangladesh neighborhood in New York once could not take its filthiness in the area any more and decided to ask why they are not putting their garbage into the trash basket on the corner. And he said their attitude was “who care?”, “what is wrong with throwing the garbage on the street because someday someone will clean up.” So, that is what I wanted to say. It is just cultural difference about the awareness about “public space”

Dhaka

you are totally wrong.I agree that its dirty in Dhaka.I think that you have only seen the bad bit of it, there are alot of great beautiful places in Dhaka, which i am sure u havent seen.If you are a citizen of Bangladesh than I am ashamed of you and if u r not than the only thing i have to say is that u cant judge a country if u’ve just seen a little of it….And i would like 2 tell u that Dhaka has become a much more cleaner city than before
