Episode 1:
19 May; Super 8 Motel; Okawville, Illinois: After an evening of driving through the mosquito clouds of the Wabash River Valley listening to local college radio, I stopped at the Super 8. They offered me a room for fifty dollars a night, right at my maximum allowance. I hedged a bit, considering a night in the car. They dropped the price to forty-two. I realized that it was eleven o’clock at night and they had many empty rooms. They could either get forty-two dollars for that room or nothing. They were at my mercy. I smiled and took the room.
