Why I recommend this place to visitors
A quite secret on the central north coast of Java, in every way lives up to the title ‘Kota Batik’, in many ways it reminds me of Bali 30 years ago. Most certainly the people are most kind and gracious towards the visitor, though English is not widely spoken it does not impede the willingly adventurous visitor.
The quality of Batik and the variety and number manufacturers in Pekalongan are the equal of the other Batik areas of Java, and to that end I remain pleasantly suprised at the lack of attention from the tourist trail, that seems to traverse Java through the Jogya/Solo route.
If you have a genuine interest in Batik, on arrival start with a visit to the Batik Musuem, where the excellent staff can show you the displays with translations, plus help you locate the better manufacturers in Pekalongan. Also a must is a visit to Pasir Grosir Dr Sunotono batik markets not far from the Bis Malam stasion.
I shall probably return in the near future.Cheers Diggas
