Lygon Street

Worth visiting!

Ok food, but generally over-rated  — 3 years ago

I say ‘worth visiting’ only because everywhere is worth visiting, but Lygon St is totally over-rated. Some ok restaurants, but generally overpriced because of the popularity of the area. Also crowded, noisy and touristy, so you might have to be in the right kind of mood…

Readings, Tiamo and Nova

Readings is always good for a bit of a sift through, and right next door is Tiamo, which is a great place to eat, especially on a summer evening. Make sure you get a table outdoors, and try the Tortellini Tartufo. Rich but nice.

Then catch a movie at the Nova, my favourite movie theatre in the city, bar the Astor.

Oh! True! Readings would totally make Lygon St worth it. And Nova had the Miyazaki run, v cool… For some reason I always think of the noisy restaurants and spruikers part when I hear “Lygon St”.

Yeah – there’s the ‘ugly’ end, and then there’s the ‘hipster’ end. Well, middle class hipster, anyway.

Heh, I wait tables on the ugly end. It is pretty damn grotesque, especially on Saturday nights.

I really really really don’t understand the people who come to my work and surrounding restaurants on a Saturday night between 7 and 9. Especially the ones with kids or 20 odd guests looking for a special celebratory meal. They will not have the best experience no matter how hard we’re trying because it’s simply too crowded. It’s so much easier to just go to one of the places just off Lygon. Or, if you’re driving a fleet of prams, just nominate one adult to get awesome takeaway pizza at Cavallino or Coretto and eat it in the park.

Well, I don’t want everyone to go away because I wont have a job … just a few people!

Otherwise, Tiamo is great if you time your visit well, and Readings and Nova! Yey!

Better Than Pittsburgh

I am a Melbournian currently living in Pittsburgh. Very far away from home.
I miss Melb University and Lygon Street very much because Pittsburgh (and many places in America) doesn’t have al fresco dining (well not as safe or as pretty) as Melbourne. So, I’d give anything right now to be back at home and to be dining at Lygon Street and anywhere else in Melbourne right now.

Nice now in the evenings

Now with daylight savings, Lygon street is a good place to be – once it gets warm. The deli on the same block as Tiamo and Readings is a good place to go, too. for cheese, or wine. Or both.
