Hey thats great you are going to Nepal. Where will you be staying?
I lived there for 8 months on Gap year during ‘04-’05.
If you are in Kathmandu, you can get by on less that $5 (UDS) a day if you plan on the cheapest accomodations. You can find places to stay in Thamel (the tourist section of Kathmandu) for 100 Rupees a night (About 67 Rupees to $1). You will really have to search for these places, though. Follow the Israelis, in my experience they know the cheapest places.
If you speak Nepali, getting cheap food will be a bit easier. All the restaurants in Thamel will be pricey, but you can find really good food. If you go to local places outside Thamel, you can get a big plate of daal bat (lentils and rice) and tarkati (veggies) for something like 25 Rupees. These places will never have english menues or signs, though.
Good luck!

thank you very much. i will be starting a 35 day trek from jiri to everest base camp and then around the kubum valley. i was starting to budget the trip. i was also wondering how much a trek would cost daily. i plan on camping, but buying food on villages on the way there. i plan to hire a guide and porter, hopefully independent from an agency, so that the price will stay low. i was told around 20$ a day for the treks, is that a good average?

thank you so much for your answers, i dream of nepal every day!

Good thinking for treking independent from an agency. I did a 21 day trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp. It was about $10 a day for me for food/accomodation (cheaper if you eat what/where the guides and porters eat – daal bat) and my guide was about $8 a day. I didn’t hire a porter, so I don’t know about them. I do know that carrying my own belongings was very rewarding, and a huge part of the experience for me. If I go on another trek (let’s hope!) I will carry my own bag again.

once agin, thanks for your help, it is hard to find information for the budget traveler. as i understand, i should be able to get by in nepal for 10$ a day for just food and accomodation. nepal is a magnificent country.
is there any thing i should know about how and where to choose a guide? safety with a guide/ responsabilities? im sure since im his employer that i should take care of him.
thanks for your help.

Yes, if you want to slum it out… which is very possible and has a wonderful charm about it, a trek around the Base Camp circuits would set you back about $10-12 a day including food and acco. As his employer, you will be expected to provide food. The accomodation will be taken care of in the amount you negotiate with the porter. It is imperative that you take a guide or porter who is referenced to you (such as by your hotel. a travel agent could do the same, but would charge a commission). You will get a good idea of the rates simply by asking around while you are there. Once again, I would stress on the importance of taking a trustworthy porter/guide. One may even reccommend registering at a local cop station stating your intent to trek, where you are trekking to and who the name and license number of your guide (more so if you are travelling alone).
