Worth visiting!

A question about this place:
Is it ok to sleep in the car at night? We do this in the U.S. on trips and have no probs. Does anyone have exp. w/trying? I can handle being run off but not arrested.  — 1 year ago

Hey Dude!

I think it’s OK to sleep in the car, but not down town in the big city’s (thieves).
Drive to the suburbs and take your nap there. We often slept in our van in Italy, in tents and barns and we never had any problems. There are two police units in Italy: the Carabinieri in the countryside and the Polizia in the city’s. If you get in contact you’ll be fine if you can give them some Euro’s (maybe 20 to 50), make excuses for yourself and drive to another place. For the case you’ll get arrested, sleep well, listen to the indoctrinations the next morning and pay your penalty. Nothing more will happen.

You are fool! offer money to Police and expecially to “carabinieri” is a serious crime and you probably get arrested.
You can’t solve all your problems with daddy’s money, but with common-sense.

I’m sorry, i was simply trying to help. Maybe my English is too bad to give a description of what i wanted to tell you.
These are only our experiences from over 20 outdoor trips across Italy.
And please be careful with suggesting from you to others (Daddy’s money). The threads on this platform should be for helping each other and not for indignities!

Best regards.

I have done it, in Milan. I was never told to go away. I think because so many people are doing other things in their cars, sleeping isn’t noticed. As for getting arrested, I’ve never known an American to get arrested for such a small thing. I don’t even know if there is a law against it.

I say “Do It”. Italians do not care as long as you don’t bother them. I used to put up a tent in the middle of a local park late at night and leave early in the morning and no one said anything. You have to be more careful in the big city but after all it’s safe. Have a good time!

I have done it… It’s safer and easier to do it in Italy then in the US… You’ll be fine… but yeah, depends what city… obviously don’t sleep in your car in a shady area… have fun…

I definetely would recommend NOT sleeping in the car. There are many, many parts of the cities that are unsafe and believe me, the cavaliere do their job well of policing the area. This is looked upon by the Italians as something the “Americans” try to do; and not part of their culture.

just lock the doors and you’ll be safe.
