Worth visiting!

Be careful  — 3 years ago

Tourists regularly get mugged in this place.
I went on a daytrip to the Falls back in 1992 and forgot I had a camera around my neck [a very ordinary point and shoot but it had the photos of the Falls on it]. I was leaving the very next day.
A man snatched the camera and the strap eventually broke even though I had a jolly good go at fighting him and there was a second person trying to get my little backpack.
The hotel manager was very useful and the Police know all of the local crooks. They actually managed to get my camera back but I had to pay a reward of G$800. Yeah, its a corrupt little place.

The risk is higher than normal in Georgetown

Being poor is not equivalent to being dishonest or criminal and I don’t know why you would want to insult the Guyanese, or the Russians and Italians for that matter. The people in Suriname are just as poor and I didn’t have to worry about that kind of thing to anywhere near the same degree in the places I lived in and visited. That is not to say that Surinaamers are more honest or worthy. It’s just that there are hot spots of crime in any country. Unfortunately getting mugged in Georgetown is a common tale, certainly in the early 90s. I certainly was well warned about it in Paramaribo when people found out my travel plans. For the record, I don’t “flash” my camera around on purpose. As I said, I simply forgot I was wearing it in all of the excitement of the trip – yes, the Kaieteur Falls ARE wonderful. It was getting late just before dusk and I think this is a potentially high risk time for getting mugged. And I suspect that as a lone female I was a target anyway. I wouldn’t have been out there by choice at that time but it was the time that the tour got back and I was the only one staying at my particular hotel on that tour.
I have wandered around Georgetown in the early morning with a camera with no problem.

i don't think she's intending to insult anyone. If an insult is inferred, that is in your mind, not hers.

The point she was trying to make was simply not to make yourself an easy target. She’s trying to help you prevent this, to YOUR power to change what you can change.

You are powerless to change other people unless they WANT to be changed. You are a good example. You didn’t “listen” to what this person, who probably has more knowledge of this area than you, tried to share with you. Typical American tourist. Your values are not everyone’s values. And this is not to say that everyone poor has bad morals, or that Guyanese are more likely to thieve or rob than anyone else.

I didn’t mean to be blunt, but you didn’t seem to want to take a hint. I hope you have a safe and happy NEW YEAR!
