I went here with my family when I was about eight years old. It was one of the many stops we made on a two-month driving trip from California to the midwest. What I want to say about Mount Rushmore is that, though at the time I didn’t realize it, it is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen and certainly the silliest thing the US has ever constructed. When I was eight, it was pretty much just a fairly boring trip to see a very familiar American icon, and I didn’t think much of it. But thinking about it now… good god. We carved four heads into a MOUNTAIN. It’s so absurdly wonderful. I’d like to go back and see it again just so that I can get some kind of handle on the magnitude of it.
