Up to 70% of people who live here are weekenders. you should know this if you are looking for “community.” The community is old, often, a little grumpy, very hippy, and then weekenders. Rich, young liberals from NYC. These weekenders don’t need to make a big effort to connect with other people. They want to enjoy their fancy homes and relax.
The most important thing you need to know about Woodstock is the following: there is a level of dysfunctionality so astonishing, that if defies explanation. These are truly the people who did so many drugs, they are now incapable of follow-through, or grown up activity. It’s very disconcerting. Are they more fun for that reason? We don’t think so. They are just screwed up. There is a selfish modus operandi in woodstock, that is what has become of all the free spirit-ed ness of the 60’s and 70’s. Very sad. And not like a lot of hippy communities in California.
You should know the town is predominantly Jewish, and because this so, a lot of local conversation is about business, money, and fear – a lot of conspiracty theory, and judgement, and there is a real lack of cordial etiquette – unlike New England, for example. People have kept their crude New York City attitudes.
If i am stereo-typing, i will admit it, but it will help you make your decision about who you want to be around, I can accept that my opinion is mine, and it may or not be of value to you.
Other than that, the landscape is very, very beautiful. The school system is very poor.
The arts? Suprising average. Although there are more artists here than an average town, which is nice, the quality of the work is not as strong as was decades ago.
Music. Believe it or not, there is No music scene here anymore. REALLY bad blues cover bands occasionally. That’s it.
