Birmingham Zoo

Worth visiting!

The lion sleeps tonight....  — 3 years ago

I was born and raised in Birmingham,Alabama and our house was just down the street from the zoo. My parents would always take me there because I loved it so much. I never got tired of the animals and their antics. My favorite memory however is sitting outside at night when all the traffic noises had died down from the day and you could actually hear the lions roaring and on occasion an elephant too, but usually just the lions. It was almost surreal to hear them and I have to admit it added more than a bit of wonder and imagination to my childhood.
I live in Connecticut now and the two things I miss the most are the Birmingham Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. Of all the ones I have seen since I moved here, none of them compare to the ones in Birmingham.

Awww!

You make me proud to be a Bama girl! I really should go to the zoo and gardens more often. It’s amazing how easy it is to take for granted the opportunities we have in our very own backyards. Thanks for sharing your memory! I’ll have to try catching a few “quiet” moments at the zoo like you did.

Stare at the bears for me....

Hey Alliebelle,

Yeah I miss it sooooooooo much. It was really a cool experience to hear the lions at night though….and sometimes they were soooo loud it sounded like they were walking free. That was rare though…usually you could tell they were in their dens from the echo affect it would make on the stone walls. The zoos up here suck. Although I here there’s one in Boston that’s supposed to be good. I doubt it will be as nice as B’hams though.
Which part of Alabama are you from? I still have a lot of family and friends there.
