Recommendation: Rodney Yee - Yoga for Strength & Energy  — 1 year ago

Rodney’s non-intermediate and non-advanced DVDs are great for:
-> The experienced Beginner who is familiar with the poses
-> Physical Yoga (very little meditation focus – at least in the DVDs that I own) Practice
-> Challenging, yet attainable Yoga (minimum sit-it-out and gawk at the screen time)

I have these as two separate titles (Yoga for Strength and Yoga for Energy). On a single DVD they are a great buy if the above are what you are looking for.

Both routines are broken up into segments. So you can do one or more sesions when you are cramped for time, spread them across your day, or the segments within either of the routines all at once for a 60-ish minute practice.

Yoga for Energy is my favorite between these two. The Vinyasa choreography makes my heart sing. Apart from Vinyasa with my Yoga Guru Venkat, no other Vinyasa produces as much joy in any of the DVDs that I own. The flow here, is almost like dancing. The locales are lush Maui outdoors. In a few segments Rodney practices with one or more other Yoginis. The way this has routine been flimed (positioning of the Yogi(ni)s, synchronization, camera-angles, location) is breath taking. There is minimal instruction. Mostly, Rodney mentions the name of the pose and expects you to follow along. I love this. There is no talking to interrupt the focus and joy in my mind. Yoga for Strength is shot indoors. The poses and sequences make it an effective strength building workout. Although the Energy is my favorite, I would rank this better for pose perfection and strength-building. Rodney is still strictly focused on cueing, bur there is more cueing compared to some of his other DVDs. A link to my experience with this DVD during my 43-in-43 days.

That sounds wonderful...

I’ve been thinking about purchasing that since you mentioned it over at the 30-in-30 goal a while ago. I think I’m going to go add it to my wishlist!

Just a couple questions, though: About how long are the individual segments? And what’s the vinyasa you like so much like, what are some of the poses it incorporates?

Answers

Length of segments

1: Awakening: 0:00 – 11:35
Lying Vinyasa (for flexibility)

2. Centering: 11:35 – 18:33
Standing Vinyasa (for energy – tiredness antidote)

3. Creativity: 18:33 – 33:18
Vinyasa that moves from standing to plank/updog/downdog and then backbend poses like bow, upward bow. (for alertness)

4. Reflection: 33:18 – 43:56
Forward bends (Rodney an a Yogini seated back to back – lovely!) (to unwind)

5. Surrender: 43:56 to 48:05
Shavasana

Ends with modification suggestions -

a. Using props (blocks and straps) for difficult poses.

b. Pose substitutions for more challenging poses.

My favorite Vinyasa seqence is Centering.

The flow is:
Mountain to Tree to Triangle to Side Stretch to Exalted Warrior to Proud Warrior to Half Moon to Brave Warrior to Revolved Triangle to Extended Leg Stretch with hands in Namaste behind back. Repeat to other side. Wide Leg Stretch to Forward Bend to Mountain,

The hand, body and leg movements that Rodney and his partner use, to move from pose to pose are exquisitely graceful and in perfect synchronization.

My next favorite is Creativity and some of the poses are mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

Derailed: Take A Cold Shower! Or A Hot One! Or Both?

I have read unsubstantiated claims, Aatmiya, about the benefits of alternating hot and cold showers in a prescribed regimen…I believe the article actually said that this is an Indian practice.

Does Venkat know about this? If so, would you please post your findings as a Recommendation in this Group?

I asked Venkat about alternating

In ancient India it was believed that bathing in cold water helped (a Seeker of Detachment from Materialism) cool the passions (from all kinds of excess – food, luxury, sex).

In Ayurveda, spot hot and cold water treatment or even bathing is thought to aid circulation.

Venkat did not know more about this.

I have tried looking for more information but have not found any.

I think cold baths/showers are nasty unless it is peak summer.
