Worth visiting!

A review of this place: A taste of the Outback

If you visit one restaurant while in Alice Springs, I’d recommend going to Bo’s. It’s a little touristy, but locals enjoy coming here as well. This is the only place I’ve found which serves crocodile on their menu.

I recommend getting their “Outback Mixed Grill” for $21.50:

A beaut combination of buffalo medallions, camel kebab, kangaroo fillet and crocodile rissoles served on a bed of garlic mash with chilli quandong sauce.

So which one tastes better… camel, kangaroo or crocodile?

Chinese grocery stores in NYC have frozen crocodile meat… or alligator meat (can’t tell from the name) but I’m not planning to try it anytime soon

kangaroo or crocodile?

I have not tasted camel meat but did notice that crocodile meat looks and tastes really close to chicken. Kangaroo meat was like beef, but then again, it may be due to the way the meats were prepared. Still, can’t go wrong with croc if you want familiarity.

tastes like chicken

Crocodile is a white meat, so it does taste like chicken, but the texture was more like beef.

The camel was very tough, and I probably wouldn’t order cooked as a steak. This may be due to the meat, or it might just be the way it’s processed. For an average steak, you just buy a cut of beef from the local meat market. For a good steak, you either dry or wet age it for a certain amount of time. I suspect, for camel and roo, your getting a very basic cut of meat.

Camel and roo meat make a lot of since in Australia, since they don’t require nearly as much water as cattle do, and they don’t overgraze the land they are on. I don’t think much has been done to convince people other than tourists to eat these alternative meats.

I really enjoyed eating the croc, but after I learned that they can live over a hundred years and are one of the earliest living creatures, I found a new sort of respect for them.
