Worth visiting!

I've always liked this one

I think I may have seen it in the flesh once before when I saw the Van Gogh touring exhibition twice in Australia, but I’m not sure, and it was good to stand an ponder it for a while. The only problem was, I couldn’t get that Don Mclean Song (‘Starry Starry night, paint your pallete blue and gold… etc. etc.’) out of my head (and still can’t), which in turn reminded me of a parody of that song by Martin Pearson based on 3 plain black canvasses in the National Gallery of Australia that went ‘Starless, Moonless night…’. I like the way he uses such huge brush strokes that swirl about in a frenzy. Van Gogh is one of those modern artists who I think there was actually somthing too, he wasn’t just taking the piss to see if he could get away with it. He had true grit in his soul… ok, I’ll give it a rest now :P

Vincent, gogh take your meds...

And what if Van Gogh had lived in the era of Prozac, Zoloft or Zyprexia? Would he have created such incredible work? Doubtful. Sure, 40 years earlier, Timmy Leary ushered in an entire new movement in art while reaching new Haights and Ashbury’s through employment of psychodelic (pun? what pun?) drugs. But in our modern ‘give ‘em a pill and cure his ill’ world, if they’d served up Van Gogh with any morsel from a suite of SSRIs, could he and would he have ceated Starry, Starry Night?
