Oaxaca (State)

(in Mexico)
My husband and I were supposed to go in October  — 1 year ago

We had booked our tickets last spring after dreaming about going to Oaxaca for many years. We had planned to stay 3 weeks in the capital city and be there for El Dia de los Muertos. Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip because of the civil unrest that’s been going on over the last year. We thought about going anyway but we decided it wasn’t the best way to see the place and I was 4 months pregnant at the time too so we didn’t want to get stuck somewhere without being able to get out of town. We were very very very sad though. I guess we’ll go another year.

Sad here, too

Oaxaca is one of my favorite places on the planet. It is worthy of your many years of dreaming, past and future. We were there a few years ago in late December, celebrating my birthday (December 23, which in Oaxaca corresponds with their big regional blow-out Night of the Radishes) as well as That Other Birthday that gets acknowledged this time of year.

Following the news about recent events has been disturbing. I hope for all our sakes that the situation gets resolved, so that you may go and enjoy its many pleasures and wonders, so that we may return for the same, so that the residents may find a way into justice and peace (and then teach us how they did it).
