I suggest checking out VRBO.com. They have tonnes of apartments and flat for vacation rentals for fairly cheap. The best part is that you have a whole apartment complete with kitchen and private bathroom at most places. That’s what we did, and we paid 50 euro a night for a good sized apartment in the Trastevere area.

When you choose a place, don’t be very picky about the central position. The prices vary a lot, and most of the time it’s just not worth the difference. I stayed in an apartment in Nomentana, which is not very central, but it was very easy to get anywhere from there (bus station right outside the house or underground station 2 bus stops from there).
I found the apartment through romeur.com and was very satisfied. Other good places to look are sleepinitaly.com and rentalinrome.com

it was nice, clean and relatively cheap. i was in roma during winter, so prices may be higher duringg peak season.
the single i got did not have it’s one bathroom, just a sink. not sure if they have private bath rooms, but for me it wasn’t a big deal.

the urls above should all be useful. it all depends on ur budget whats good for you. i preferred to stay a little bit out of town (six or seven stops on the metro) cos it was A LOT cheaper.

I personally like the Campo dei Fiori area, it’s pretty close to everything you really want to visit.
I’ve stayed at three places there (see, I told you I like it): Residenza en Farnese, Hotel St. Georges, and an apartment on Via del Pavone.
Our last stay was at Via del Pavone, and it was an apartment for 4, but cozy enough for two. I used venere.com for all my visits, and I highly recommend them as well.
Have fun. Rome is beautiful, romantic, and meant to be savored. Wear comfy shoes. You’re going to be walking a LOT.
Enjoy!

I stayed at a small family holiday resort with chalets and bungalows and camping. It was very cheap (less than 15 euros a night) and even though about 20k from Rome, there was a bus everyday to Rome and back for a few euros. It was a really different experience to the regular hostel in the city that I go for. Not so good if you want to go out at night and not rent a car.

We stayed at a small hotel called Hotel Mogdiliani near Via Veneto/Barbarini, near the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.

The rooms were small, but clean and the reception staff were very helpful. Good breakfast too. We paid approx E120/night. If you can afford it take the rooftop penthouse (you can see it on the website at right) – great views at sunset.
