A question about this place:
I'm going to India in two and a half weeks and was wondering if anyone had any "must-do" places for me. I'll be in Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, Goa, and Mumbai, without much time in between places...  — 2 years ago

In Jaipur, you must visit the City Palace, Wind Palace and the Amber Fort. Those are both the highlights of Jaipur. There’s a really cool ancient astrology complex right across the street from the City Palace complex, it’s very interesting.

Do you already have a place to stay in Jaipur? I would recommend the Jas Vilas, run by Mr. and Mrs. Singh and very nice.

It’s too bad you don’t have time to stop by Udaipur for a couple of days, the most charming place I’ve been in all of India.

have fun!

Thanks! I think we talked about the astrology complex in one of my classes, something about it being a really modern looking design, though it was pretty old?

i agree with the astronomy place in jaipur
go there for sure and the monkey temple too
the fort is scary…we dubbed it: torture fort as they were jabbing the poor elephants behind their ears with these horrible daggers…we left right away
find a quiet less.busy beach in goa…some of them are really overrun by tourists…ugh
riding the backward rickshaws in jaipur can be a lot of fun
we stayed at the ‘evergreen hotel’ there and it was great and had a huge garden and pool and restaurant with great food(6 years ago though) with great little jewellery shops all around…and they actually had hot showers which many other places didn’t at the time…even though they claimed to
have fun!

Monkey temple? Cool! That’s horrible about the “torture fort…” Your hotel claimed to have fun? I think the weird little translated hotels are so funny – one of the places we were looking at staying was “Cottage Yes Please!”

In Delhi, don’t forget to visit Connaught Place.
In Jaipur, Pink Palace and in Agra – Taj Mahal.

Hey, Jenbee, that’s a whirlwind trip!

Agra – of course the Taj Mahal. We hired a guide and learned some cool things we wouldn’t have found out otherwise. We thought it was cheesy that after the Taj, he took us to a rug factory and a stone inlaying shop – he was clearly going to get a cut if we got hooked into buying. But it was well worthwhile – the vendors were agressive, but it was all REALLY interesting.

Goa… is Goa… it’s all pretty cool. Great beaches where we stayed, at the White Sands Radisson near Varca City. SWANK hotel worth the splurge for a couple days, but there are certainly better deals.

Mumbai – Marine drive, blah, not that big a deal if you’re short on time. But go to the Taj Hotel area and see the Gateway of India. If the weather’s good, hop on a ferry to Elefanta Island. Behind the Taj hotel, on the Colaba causeway, tons of vendors along the sidewalk have cool cheap stuff for sale. Haggle madly! There’s a store called Cottage Industries that has good prices (non haggle) on all sorts of good stuff… leather, silk, tea, brass, stone, everything. COOLEST THING IN MUMBAI - go to Sanjay Ghandi National Park, a little outside the city. A mountain pocked with temples carved right into the rock of the mountain (I think 109 in all!) Monkeys all over the place. A creek with waterfalls. VERY cool place. Have fun!

Thanks! The Sanjay Ghandi Park will be a priority now, though many of the other stuff you suggested sounded pretty awesome as well. Your photos are great by the way! I like the tourist jewelry picture and the little boy watching ones especially, thanks again! P.S. I’ve heard that it’s better to give candy or little toys to the begging kids (one friend even said bubbles) instead of money, did you try something like this?

Yes, please avoid giving money.

I think you should go to Varanasi (Beneras). There’s nothing more amazing than a super early canoe ride down the Ganges. Really, you’ll see images never to be forgotten. As for giving things to kids, give them real food. When you are starving, that’s what counts. Any money earned will probably just be taken away from them at the end of the day.
Have fun!!!

I’d say your best bet is getting a guide book and seeing what sounds interesting to you. Good luck and have fun!

Hi,

You should visit “Gateway of India” in Mumbai. A visit to South Mumbai (Flora fountain, Nariman point, Marine Drive, Victoria Terminus, etc) is a must do.

In Jaipur I recommend “Palace of the Winds”.

Of course, the “Taj Mahal” is a must see when you visit Agra.

You can take a North Goa as well as South Goa tour once you reach Goa. The tours wil take a day each. That will cover all the tourist attractions and beaches for you.

Hope this info helps. Have a great trip!!

Don’t forget to try the local cuisine everywhere – you’ll experience the most exotic variety of flavours along your route of travel.

Most places you’re visiting are hot tourist spots – so be careful. However, in some forts across Rajasthan it may be interesting to hire a guide (after u’ve practiced ur bargaining skills). Stuff you’d typically not find in a guide book – for example – how the dwellers kept cool during blazing hot summers? The fort (think the one in Udaipur) was equipped with some sort of natural air-conditioning.

Take a walk along Juhu Beach in Mumbai. Enjoy, and be prepared to expect just about anything, and you won’t get a culture-shock.
